14 Aug 5 Tips for a Smooth First Semester for Freshman College Students
Game bài 68Many students today are used to learning face-to-face inside the classroom. Now, due to the pandemic, it is not advisable to continue with this learning setup since it poses a significant health and safety risk to everyone on campus. Therefore, colleges in the Philippines have started thinking of solutions on how to continue learning despite not being able to meet up in person.
The solutions that many top colleges in Manila, including Enderun Colleges, have decided to implement is remote learning. Remote learning has many advantages such as allowing the students to learn whenever, wherever, and however works best for them. However, it can also present new challenges. This is very true for college freshmen as this will be their first time in an all online setting, plus they are also in the midst of adapting to the pace of college classes. With that in mind, here are a few tips for your first semester online as a freshman college student:
1. Treat online classes like regular classes
Game bài 68One of the few mistakes students make is not treating online classes seriously. Yes, it is easier not to pay attention to the lectures online because you can opt to not turn on your camera and microphone. However, having that kind of mindset will stick with you even when it is time that you need to go back to face-to-face. Your first college semester will often dictate your study habits throughout college, so it’s best to start off on the right foot and take your online classes as seriously as you would face-to-face classes.
2. Actively participate in and out of class
Game bài 68Class participation and understanding has become more challenging now that it is online. Therefore it is more important to participate during the discussion as much as you can so that you can understand the lectures better. Participation is not only limited during classes, but it can also be commenting on a classmate’s post in the discussion board or asking your professor a question whether it is during or after class.
4. Create a study space and stay organized
Wherever you are, you will encounter distractions since you are not in an environment ideal for learning. Therefore, you should dedicate a quiet and organized space for your online classes. It does not matter where it is as long as it is a place that is relatively quiet and free of distractions. Wherever you choose, make sure that the internet connection is good so that it does not affect your online learning.
5. Figure out how you learn best
Once you have determined your learning space/environment, it is time to figure out how you learn best. When are your energy levels at its highest, is it in the morning, afternoon or night? From that, set aside a reasonable amount of time to review lessons, or do assignments. It is also good to take note of what your learning style is because everyone learns differently. If you are a visual learner, rewatch presentations, watch educational videos, or draw visual aids such as mind maps. There are more different learning styles, and it is best if you experiment to know which one is yours to maximize your learning.
